Suggestivism NYC and Sketches

I'll be exhibiting a new piece in "Suggestivism NYC" at Bold Hype Gallery which will be my first group exhibition in New York! It opens May 10th and runs until June 30th. Big thanks to Nathan Spoor, Eric Althin and Ken Harman for the inclusion.

I can't wait to see all the works. I'm honoured to be chosen as the lineup is both inspiring and varied, it's going to be the flagship show of the year and I hope that some of you can make it out to see it in person.

Media is mostly pencil, coloured pencil, with a bit of pastel and some acrylic washes.

"Nathan Spoor has curated a show that opens May 10th- June 30th in New York’s Bold Hype gallery. Suggestivism, a century old term that has been used to describe writers and artists from the past such as Edgar Allen Poe and Georges Seurat. The contemporary concept of suggestivism according to Spoor, “does not center around claiming a title for giving any movement a name, but for introducing a common creative thread amongst several disparate and unique voices within the modern art world.” These select artists have intriguing and contemporary aesthetics that speak to the tides of our time.

Owl Song

Here's my piece for the "Picks of the Harvest" show at Thinkspace Gallery in LA. I'll have the final work plus the four prelim works, which Andrew has generously included in the show, framed. One has sold already!

The idea morphed several times, the initial idea was a tree wrapping around the girl, with glowing orbs of light, kind of like musical notes moving upwards, which were the owls. I changed it into a horizontal left to right format and tried to integrate everything into the pattern, and give each element its own life and place in the rhythm of the picture. I had to explore a lot of new areas of artmaking that I don't have maps for, going in blind a lot of the time, but that's where the real fun is anyway.

Picks of the Harvest Prelims

Hey all!

I'm exhibiting with Thinkspace Gallery this weekend, and up until the show I'll be posting previews and prelims of my work to promote the show.

I'd also like to announce I just sent my work in for the next Safehouse Group show, which will be opening March the 23rd in San Francisco. Really excited to be a part of their shows again.

Here's the first full prelim sketch, just trying to draw in a rhythmic lively way and work out the flow of the piece, it's 19" by 18" pencil, coloured pencil and pastel.

In the prelim below,  I kept the pose the same but I'm trying to define the owl creature and it's rotating owl heads, gathered some more reference, I decided to keep the same pose but change the composition. It's 16" by 18"pencil, coloured pencil and pastel.










I wasn't really happy with the way it was heading so I reconstructed the composition, moved parts around etc till it felt much closer to what I wanted. Had to remove the creature and replaced it with flying owls.
