Upcoming Show Dates for 2012/2013

Hey Everyone!

Here are the show and event dates and for 2012 and 2013. Just came up with the idea and threw it together over my (slightly extended) lunch break.

Hope you guys can make it out to some of them, I've had a great, challenging and fun year thus far. It's not over yet and there's plenty more work to be done before I can have a little break over Christmas and New Years.
Some of the highlights include the Moleskine Project #2 (just a few weeks away) which I'm co-curating and the solo show at Thinkspace next year.

I'll be in the states for a month, from the very end of November until the first few days of Jan. Big thanks to everyone for the support this year, I'm hoping that next year will be even stronger!

Sonic Bloom

I was recently commissioned to draw Ala Paredes, the model in several of my works, in a fashion similar to the Nocturne piece.

Even though it was familiar territory, the work challenged me right up to the final brush stroke. I continued experimenting with iridescent mixed media throughout. There's a lot of texture that's lost in the scan, so I included some detail shots to make up for it.

It took much longer than I expected, as a result not only did I learn a great deal but the final image is a total surprise compared to what I had in mind when I started!

Thanks for coming back to the blog and have a great day!

Final size: 28 x 45 cm (11" x 17 3/4")

Here's the prelim (for sale if anyone's interested!)

I transferred the prelim to the final white paper and begin to work out the tonal scheme.

Testing out some basic colours, filling in the background and doing the tedious, horrible work of the owl patterns.

Worked on much of the piece in Brisbane

Adding more base colours, building the foundation.
There were still a lot of issues here that I hadn't attended to, as the process usually involves working with an ugly mess and continually trying to bring it all up together.

Group show in Italy- "Go With the Flow"

Very excited about my upcoming group show in Lucca, Italy. It's a real treat and honour to be showing with some of my personal favourite artists!

Cheers

Rod

Here are some sketches from my trip in Brisbane- from when I went to the Prado Exhibition in the Queensland Art Gallery. I always learn so much from drawing directly from master paintings, the reproductions do them no justice. Not only is it inspirational, but I really feel that it's possible to get a better glimpse into their genius than just looking, even if it's a quick sketch.

Hot Winter

Hey guys!

Just at Brisbane doing a studio residency at Salisbury Studios, and teaching life drawing, painting, still life and more.
I scanned a bunch of the drawings I was working on just before I left, to keep this blog going until I get the chance to get more new stuff done.

They are all preliminaries! The top two are almost finished, and I'll probably leave the bottom one as it is for now...

Wild at heart + progress shots

This is my piece for the 'Wild at Heart' show at Thinkspace, which has sold. I'm sure it was a great night and raised a ton of funds for Born Free. I also posted up some moleskine art, with progress shots for both! Cheers

The thumbnail sketch, chosen out of several.

The line sketch, which was then blown up and used as a guide to start the final.

 Drawing it up!

More art coming tomorrow!
